How to Read a Knowledge Base Term
Every term in the ConnectedEarth Knowledge Base is more than a definition. Each entry is structured to answer a specific set of questions — about what a technology is, how it works in practice, where it fits in a broader system, and what it connects to. Here is what each part of a term page tells you.
The Content Fields
Definition
A precise, technical statement of what the term is. No context, no caveats — just the clearest possible answer to “what does this mean?” If you need a single sentence to carry into a meeting or a document, this is it.
Concept
How the term works in practice. Where the Definition is a statement, the Concept is an explanation — it describes the mechanics, the conditions, and the context in which the technology operates. This is the section that separates understanding a term from being able to use it.
Explainer
A deeper analysis written through the ConnectedEarth lens. This is where tradeoffs appear, failure modes are named, and cross-industry relevance is examined. The Explainer is where the Knowledge Base stops being a glossary and starts being useful to people making decisions.
The Taxonomy Chips
At the top of every term you will find up to four colour-coded chips. These are not decorative — each chip is a browse path into a different dimension of the Knowledge Base.
Industry (amber chip)
Shows which industry this term is most relevant to. Click it to see all Knowledge Base terms relevant to that vertical — Mining, Energy, Maritime, Aviation, Government & Defense, or Telecommunications.
System Layer (blue chip)
Shows where in the connectivity stack this term sits, from Access at the edge through Transport, Core Network, Ground Segment, Non-Terrestrial, Edge Compute, and beyond.
Impact Theme (green chip)
Shows the operational or business outcome this term is most associated with — Resilience, Security, Automation, Cost Efficiency, and others. The same themes that connect KB terms to editorial analysis.
Term Type (grey chip)
Shows the category of concept — Protocol, Hardware, Software, Regulatory, and so on. Term Type chips are descriptive only and do not link to a browse archive.
The Relationship Fields
Is A
What category does this term belong to? An “Is A” link points upward to a broader concept. MPLS is a network protocol. A network protocol is a type of communications standard. Following “Is A” links climbs the abstraction ladder.
Part Of
What larger system or architecture does this term sit inside? “Part Of” is structural rather than categorical — it describes assembly, not classification. A ground station antenna is part of a ground segment. A ground segment is part of a satellite communications system.
Depends On
What must exist for this term to function? These are prerequisites — the technologies, standards, or infrastructure that this term assumes are already in place. If a dependency is missing in a deployment, this term will not work as described.
Enables
What does this term make possible? The inverse of “Depends On.” Following “Enables” links shows the downstream value of a technology — what becomes available once it is in place.
Constrains
What does this term limit, restrict, or impose costs on? Constraints are not failures — they are the boundaries within which a technology operates. Understanding what a technology constrains is as important as understanding what it enables.
Used In
Where does this term appear in the real world? “Used In” links point to specific contexts, environments, deployments, or architectures where the term is actively applied. This is the bridge between definition and deployment.
Replaces
What did this term supersede? Technology evolves, and “Replaces” preserves that history. Following these links shows the evolutionary path of a technology — what came before, what was deprecated, and why.
Related Terms
Terms that belong to the same conceptual cluster. These are not hierarchical or directional — they are grouping associations. If you are exploring a topic area rather than tracing a specific relationship, “Related Terms” is the widest net.
