Information Governance

Definition

Information Governance is the discipline of establishing and enforcing rules for how information is classified, managed, accessed, retained, protected, and audited across an organization.

Key Points
  • Information governance defines who owns information and how it must be handled.
  • It covers classification, retention, access control, protection, and auditability.
  • It is broader than data protection alone because it includes policy, process, and accountability.
  • Weak governance creates stale, inconsistent, or unauthorized information use.
  • In operational environments, governance is necessary for both human decision-making and AI-assisted workflows.
Concept

Information governance sits above storage and retrieval. It decides what information exists, who can see it, how long it is kept, whether it is authoritative, and what controls apply before it can be used. In practice, this includes policies for records, retention, access rights, data protection, and accountability, along with the technical mechanisms that enforce those rules. Without governance, knowledge management becomes a collection of disconnected documents and conflicting sources rather than a controlled operational asset.

Explainer

For ConnectedEarth, information governance matters because operational teams handle material that can be sensitive, safety-critical, regulated, or commercially confidential. A NOC incident record, a maritime port call document, a mining maintenance note, or a defense-related reference may all require different handling rules. If governance is weak, the wrong people can see the wrong information, stale guidance can survive indefinitely, and AI systems can surface content that should have been restricted or retired. In that sense, information governance is the framework that keeps knowledge management usable without making it unsafe or non-compliant.
