Concept

In practice, sensors are the entry point for system visibility. They may measure temperature, pressure, vibration, position, current, location, RF power, or many other variables. Without reliable sensing, no control or observability layer can make trustworthy decisions.

Sensors are not neutral components. Their placement, calibration, resolution, and refresh rate determine what the system believes is happening. In remote and distributed systems, sensor reliability becomes even more important because there may be no human observer on site to verify the reading.

Explainer

The biggest limitation of a sensor is that it measures only what it is designed to detect, and often only under certain conditions. Range limits, drift, environmental contamination, or bad calibration can all distort the reading. A sensor can therefore be technically present and still operationally misleading.

Another challenge is integration. Sensor data has to be transported, timestamped, and interpreted correctly or it can produce false alarms and bad control decisions. In practice, the value of a sensor is only realized when the data pipeline and the operational logic around it are also sound.
