In practice, an enterprise network spans access, transport, routing, segmentation, and security controls. It must support office users, remote workers, cloud services, and branch sites while still preserving governance over who can access what.
The design challenge is to remain scalable and secure while accommodating growth, mergers, remote work, and changing application patterns. That makes the enterprise network a living operational platform rather than a static installation.
The main challenge is that enterprise networks must serve very different needs at once. Users want simplicity and mobility; security teams want segmentation and control; operations want visibility and recoverability. If the design does not balance those needs, it becomes either too rigid to use or too open to trust.
Another limitation is dependency management. Enterprise networks often rely on shared WAN services, cloud interconnects, identity systems, and wireless access. If those dependencies are not designed carefully, a failure in one layer can become a broad service outage.
