An industrial network is the communications infrastructure that supports industrial control, monitoring, and operational connectivity across a plant, site, or distributed asset base. It includes protocols, segmentation, access control, and transport mechanisms appropriate to industrial work.

In practice, industrial networks must carry traffic that is often more sensitive to delay and disruption than ordinary business traffic. Control messages, telemetry, alarms, and remote access all have different requirements, so the network needs careful segmentation and prioritization.
Industrial networking also has to coexist with aging equipment, vendor-specific protocols, and strict safety expectations. That makes it less forgiving than many IT networks and much more dependent on disciplined architecture and operations.
The key limitation of industrial networks is that they must serve legacy and modern systems at the same time. That often means supporting protocols and devices that were not built with today’s security assumptions. The result is a network that has to be both operationally stable and carefully protected.
Another challenge is that industrial traffic often mixes real-time control with remote access and telemetry. If the network is designed like a generic office network, latency, jitter, or poor segmentation can create both process and security issues. Good design therefore keeps control flows explicit and limited.
