Radio Access Network

A radio access network is the collection of radio access equipment, control logic, and supporting transport that connects endpoints to a mobile or wireless service. It manages radio resources, mobility, and access continuity.

The main limitation of the radio access network is its dependence on local radio conditions. Coverage holes, interference, and capacity pressure can all degrade service even when the core network is healthy. That makes planning and optimization essential.
A second challenge is that the radio access layer is tightly coupled to mobility and spectrum use. If the design is too rigid, users experience gaps or dropped sessions; if it is too loose, the network can become inefficient or unstable. Good RAN design balances flexibility with control.
