Path Diversity

Path diversity is the design condition in which a network has more than one independent path available between endpoints or service domains. It is used to improve resilience, traffic distribution, and fault tolerance.

Path diversity is a broader concept than redundant path because it focuses on the architectural principle rather than a single alternate route. It is the reason operators invest in alternate facilities, varied carriers, and disjoint routing.
The main limitation of path diversity is that it is only useful if the paths are truly independent. If two “different” paths share the same conduit, site, or upstream dependency, the apparent diversity may vanish during a real incident. That means failure-domain analysis is essential.
A second challenge is cost. Diverse paths often require additional infrastructure, coordination, or provider relationships. Good design therefore uses diversity where the operational consequence justifies the investment.
