Classful IP addressing is an IPv4 addressing scheme in which address ranges are divided into fixed classes with predetermined network and host boundaries. It was used in early internet design before classless methods became dominant.

In practice, classful addressing assigned blocks according to class A, B, or C boundaries rather than letting operators size networks more precisely. That made the model simple, but it also caused inefficiency because many organizations needed blocks that were too large or too small.

The model is now mainly significant as a historical reference point. It helps explain why subnetting and classless inter-domain routing became necessary.
