Path Congestion

Path congestion is the state in which a network path experiences traffic demand that approaches or exceeds its effective capacity, resulting in degraded performance. It is a path-level performance condition.
- Path congestion occurs when traffic exceeds path capacity.
- It increases delay, jitter, and loss.
- It is a trigger for traffic steering and failover decisions.
- It can affect both transport and application delivery.
- It is a direct threat to service quality.
In practice, congestion shows up as slower delivery, buffering, jitter, or dropped traffic. It often appears when too much demand is pushed through a limited or shared route.
Path congestion is one reason redundant paths and traffic steering are valuable. By shifting traffic away from an overloaded path, operators can preserve service quality and avoid failure escalation.
The main limitation created by path congestion is that it does not always look like an outage. The path still exists, but the service becomes poor enough that users experience it as broken. That makes congestion a serious operational issue rather than a mild inconvenience.
A second challenge is that congestion can migrate. If the network shifts traffic to an alternate route, that route may become congested too unless the operator has enough path diversity. Good design therefore combines capacity planning with routing control.
