3GPP Release 18
Also known as: 3GPP Rel-18, Release 18, 5G-Advanced
The set of technical specifications published by 3GPP as Release 18, functionally frozen in 2024, defining the first "5G-Advanced" enhancements to the 5G System, including expanded NTN mobility and payload support, AI/ML-assisted air interface functions, and broadened RedCap and ambient IoT capability.
- First release under the "5G-Advanced" branding, marking the shift from initial 5G rollout toward incremental system-wide optimization
- Extends Release 17's NTN baseline with improved handover procedures and broader regenerative payload feature support
- Introduces AI/ML-based enhancements to air interface functions such as channel state feedback and beam management
- Expands RedCap into a broader device tier range and adds ambient IoT specification work
- Builds additively on Release 17 — a Release 18-compliant device or network still requires the Release 17 NTN baseline it extends
A vendor or operator claiming Release 18 NTN capability is claiming both the Release 17 NTN baseline and the specific enhancements Release 18 adds on top of it — improved handover reliability for moving-beam scenarios, wider regenerative payload feature support, and expanded frequency band and device class coverage. Because 3GPP releases accumulate rather than reset, evaluating "which release" a product implements remains the practical way to determine its actual NTN capability set.
The operational significance of Release 18 for NTN specifically is that it addresses gaps Release 17 left as either unsupported or optional — most notably more robust handover procedures for high-frequency beam or satellite transitions, and stronger support for regenerative payload architectures that Release 17 defined but left relatively underspecified in places. This matters for procurement timing in CE verticals: equipment certified only to Release 17 may lack the improved handover reliability or regenerative payload interoperability that Release 18 adds, which is a material difference for maritime and aviation deployments where handover frequency is high and service continuity expectations are strict. The AI/ML air interface enhancements introduced in Release 18 are, at this stage, targeted primarily at terrestrial RAN optimization rather than NTN-specific functions, so their near-term relevance to non-terrestrial deployments is limited compared to the handover and payload improvements.
