Signal Strength

Signal strength is the measured level of received radio energy at a receiving point. It is a basic indicator of link quality and propagation conditions.
- Signal strength measures received radio power.
- It is shaped by path loss, antenna placement, and obstruction.
- It is one of the simplest RF quality indicators.
- It does not by itself guarantee good service.
- It is fundamental in link planning and troubleshooting.
In practice, signal strength gives operators a quick picture of how much energy survives the path between transmitter and receiver. It is affected by distance, obstruction, antenna placement, and path loss.
A signal can be strong and still support poor service if interference or jitter is high. That is why signal strength is useful, but not sufficient, as a performance indicator.
The main limitation of signal strength is that it is only one dimension of RF quality. A strong signal does not automatically mean high throughput, low jitter, or stable service. Good engineering therefore uses signal strength together with other metrics.
A second challenge is that signal strength can vary with motion and environment. In mobile and airborne settings, the reading may change constantly as geometry and obstruction change. That makes it useful for operational awareness but not as a standalone guarantee.
